S.F. cops seizing DJ gear by Jennifer Maerz
San Francisco DJs at underground parties in SOMA are claiming that their equipment is being unfairly seized, and in some cases being held beyond a reasonable amount of time, by the San Francisco Police Department. A national electronic-rights organization is investigating the claims.

Over the past six months, music fans who have been spinning records — or even just attending friends' events — claim their laptops, soundboards, and mixers have been taken by the cops in police raids. The busted gatherings include an illegal dance party, an artist fundraiser, and a private Halloween bash. While it's unclear whether the lack of official permits was enough reason to close down all these parties, the bigger question is why the police are seizing and holding private property that DJs and attendees use as valuable tools for making their art and living.

Ghost, Edson?? Any comments? What's going on?
I doubt they will be able to keep doing that, SF is a city where people take a big issue when it deals with their personal rights. I'm sure someone in the city will look into it..
It's very interesting that some of them have already been to court and have paid their fines yet still don't have their equipment.

Almost had mine taken at a UC Berkeley party! Lucky I can talk like a businessman and the cop saw i wasnt riffraff. My shit would totally have been taken.
Dang, i guess it's happening all over. Not the right permits then?

reminds of the days on the underground raves in southern cali, when they would confiscate the sound, and the djs records!
so nothing really has changed, same policys just different djs tools to steal this time around. confiscate is just a legal term for theft. yea basically permits are like rental agreements with you and the city over property, dont pay we take away.
one way around this is hire a police officer for security at the party you're throwing. we did this at u-night 2 this past weekend and had no issues whatsoever. i mean i'm sure it may make a few people feel uncomfortable, but at least the party will more than likely run smoothly and since there is a cop there on YOUR payroll, there's no need for random cops to show up and shut the party down and steal your gear.
Some of these cats said they paid their fines and went to court already yet their equipment is still being held. That's pretty crappy.
